The Essex fire department recommends that you test your smoke alarms every month, one way to not forget is to put it in your calendar on the first of the month.

What type of detectors are available?

The most common types of detector in the home are optical and heat. Optical smoke detectors are good at detecting slower burning fires and smoke such as from electrical fires, heat detectors are used in kitchens for example to avoid false alarms from burnt toast. They detect a swift rise in temperature which could indicate fire.
